New research reveals that individuals who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals buying these drugs must be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
The team note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Experts suggest the way of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you become ravenous," said a patient.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Interest
Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Use is higher among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts stress that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural management.
