Gianni Infantino Suggests Keeping an Open Perspective on Moving International Football Tournaments From the Summer Season.

Infantino has suggested the possibility to additional cold-weather World Cups and Club World Cups, declaring that football needs to “keep an open mind” about relocating major tournaments from the summer period.

Ongoing Conversations for Post-2030 Calendar

Talks are currently happening about the post-2030 match timetable, a key area of concern due to growing pressure from enlarged events. The global body established a task force to examine the issue, and FIFA itself has given itself a headache by granting the 2034 tournament to the Gulf country. The event will likely be held during winter months, similar to Qatar 2022. Infantino suggested soccer must become accustomed to untying itself from the European summer.

“We're deep into detailed discussions, we're constantly talking,” he remarked. “The discussion extends beyond one event, it's a general reflection. Even to play in some European countries during July temperatures are extreme.”

Improving the Match Schedule

The president made these comments on the sidelines of the European club organization annual meeting in Rome. He shared comparable views to hundreds of attendees, stating: “We should look into the globalisation of soccer's international timetable.” He pointed to October and March as “the months you can play everywhere.”

Such a drastic reconfiguration would create disruptions, though the organization's capacity to implement its wishes may be compromised in case of a registered objection regarding the calendar implementation, filed to the European Commission previously by league organizations, triggers legal processes.

Enlarging the Global Club Tournament

The governing body is considering approaches to grow the Club World Cup. A 48-team structure might be used in the future, with the potential for a qualifying playoff event that narrows the field to 32 teams. Infantino alluded to major proposals in his conference presentation, saying FIFA would “strive to determine how to expand this tournament, improved further, even more impactful.”

Potential Hosts for 2029

Spain and Morocco are leading candidates for the 2029 event, scheduled to occur in the summer, although other contenders are being considered. An early revisit to the US is possible and reports indicate the Chinese government, which was scheduled to host the tournament in 2021 before the pandemic, continues to show interest.

FIFA is considering holding the Club World Cup every two years following 2029. Qatar appears most likely to stage the 2031 tournament, an arrangement that could be more straightforward if Infantino's favored rejig come to fruition with winter dates would be required.

Worries Regarding International Matches

Infantino expressed any long-term move towards organizing national league matches overseas would be a “big risk”. Current situations saw approval given for games in America and Australia, emphasising this was granted under unique circumstances. The governing body's approval is essentially automatic, though the president indicated the concept raised concerns.

“We have a structure featuring matches within countries, regionally and worldwide,” he explained. “This system that developed football the No 1 sport in the world. If we want to break this structure, we take a big risk.”

Spanish Giant Reenters Fold

Among other developments at the EFC general assembly, was confirmation of the Catalan club's comeback to the fold, which was anticipated by Barcelona's leader Joan Laporta's presence at the official dinner. The club had left from the organization following the failed Super League attempt in two thousand twenty-one, which they had driven with other major clubs.

The organization's leader the football executive joked that their rekindled relationship was made official during a “romantic walk”. Their readmission appears to reduce chances on any return of the controversial competition plan.
