Critical Role Campaign 4 Unveils the Soldiers Group

From the very beginning of Campaign 4, fresh DM Brennan Mulligan has kept fans guessing with deep backstory, a wide array of heroes, and a gripping narrative showcasing angels, fiends, and malevolent powers expanding in power within Dol-Makjar.

Heads-up: Spoilers for the latest installment of Campaign 4 are included.

The Warrior Group Unveiled

The latest chapter finished on a dramatic pause and presented the premier party of heroes who will split off from the central cast to embark on their separate journey, distinct from the other two tables.

The Soldiers table includes Teor Pridesire (played by Travis), the agile character (Laura Bailey), Tyranny (Whitney), Wicander (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie).

Why Split the Party?

Given an extensive roster, it was obvious from the start that maintaining everyone at one table would be impossible.

That’s why, the initial installments of the new season serve as an Prelude, intertwining the characters’ stories before splitting into three distinct groups: Warriors, Planners, and Explorers.

The Nature of the Warrior Group

As described by Brennan Lee Mulligan, the Soldiers table is for players who are drawn to a typically action-packed fight-heavy gameplay experience where non-violent answers are scarce.

At first glance, characters like the squeamish cleric Wicander might seem out of place, but the developments of the latest installment make it clear why these specific adventurers are perfectly fit for the Soldiers table.

Reasons to Leave

For one thing, the group has a clear idea where to head next after a brutal opening clash with The Crow Keepers.

A former ally of Thjazi—whose demise initiated the story’s plot—used the enemy for his selfish purposes, invading the hidden lair, attacking Thimble, and stealing all the magical artifacts to auction.

The antagonist then cleared his obligations and ran away to a secure base in Gormalay, Timmony, beyond Dol-Makjar, with Teor’s brother close behind.

Character Drivers

Moreover, each member has a individual motive to leave the city Dol-Makjar:

  • The rogue, as the close ally and trusted friend, desires revenge.
  • The knowledgeable figure has experience in Timmony and warns that it is a dangerous environment.
  • Tyranny and The healer, having disobeyed his relatives’ demands to kill the fighter and instead freed him, have no safe haven.
  • However, their status as prominent individuals in House Halovar could help the party reach places they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Moreover, The fighter vowed a life debt to The cleric for his salvation and will now accompany him wherever.

Fugitives

In addition, all of them are wanted by the rulers that rule Dol-Makjar for a range of causes, making remaining behind no longer safe:

  • Thimble and The hero are known criminals.
  • The warrior and The cleric defied the powerful family and the army of fiends they are aligned with.
  • The target is wanted dead by the family.

This leaves them no alternative but to journey toward the remote area in search of Casimir.

Upcoming Developments

Based on episode three’s Cooldown, we learn that the Soldiers table will be absent next week, leaving the rest of the cast members to round up the Seekers and Schemers parties.

Audiences can anticipate learning which characters will be where in Campaign 4’s last Overture episode, streaming live on the upcoming Thursday.
