A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major government projects.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” stated the country's president.
The president reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, beating predictions to be partially launched before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled ongoing apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party urged an prompt suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party stated that the situation "requires prompt explanations."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
